I just read the San Francisco Giants' Team Health Report at Baseball Prospectus and found something I thought I'd share about Edgar Renteria. Brad Wochomurka's article states, "Renteria ... had to deal with a lingering hamstring injury at midseason before rebounding for a decent second half." I decided to investigate a little further. His batting lines pre- and post-All Star-break were .254/.301/.326 and .296/.343/.469, but a friend pointed out that his post-All-Star break numbers were mostly caused by his August and September numbers. I was trying to find a reason why his numbers would have improved, like time off. His only time off was the All-Star break, so I looked closer at his July numbers. For the month, he hit .220/.264/.293, which doesn't suggest improvement, but if you split July into pre- and post-All-Star break, he hit .100/.100/.100 and .288/.351/.404. Now that suggests the improvement did occur at the All-Star break. His power didn't come back until mid-August, but his batting average and OBP were back immediately after the All-Star break. It's very possible that Renteria's miserable first half was due to injury. If Renteria can stay healthy, he could surprise some people. It won't be enough to target him as your SS in fantasy drafts, but it could make him a quality MI or that guy you pick up off waivers to replace your injured or underperforming SS.
